Potter Stewart Quotation Answer UPSC CSE Ethics Paper

What dies the following quotation mean to you?

"Ethics is knowing the difference between what you have the right to do and what is right to do " -- Potter Stewart. UPSC CSE 2022 GS 4, Ethics Integrity Paper

Answer

This quotation means to me that ethics is not only about following the rules or laws that grant us certain rights, but also about following the moral principles or values that guide us to do what is good, just, and virtuous. Ethics is about exercising our rights with responsibility and accountability, and respecting the rights of others as well. Ethics is about choosing the right action or decision, not because we are obliged or compelled to do so, but because we are convinced and committed to do so.

For example, I may have the right to free speech, but that does not mean I can say whatever I want without regard for the truth or the consequences. Ethics requires me to use my right to free speech in a way that is truthful, respectful, and constructive, and not in a way that is false, harmful, or destructive. Similarly, I may have the right to privacy, but that does not mean I can hide or conceal whatever I want without regard for the law or the public interest. Ethics requires me to use my right to privacy in a way that is lawful, transparent, and accountable, and not in a way that is illegal, secretive, or unaccountable.

Another example, Suppose you are a journalist and you have the right to publish a story that exposes a scandal involving a politician. However, you also know that the story is based on unreliable sources and may not be true. You also know that publishing the story will ruin the politician's reputation and career, and may also affect their family and friends. What would you do?

Ethics is knowing the difference between what you have the right to do (publish the story) and what is right to do (verify the facts and be fair and honest). Ethics is about doing the right thing, even if it means giving up some benefits or advantages. Ethics is also about respecting the dignity and rights of others, even if they are your opponents or enemies.

Therefore, this quotation means to me that ethics is knowing the difference between what you have the right to do and what is right to do, and acting accordingly. Ethics is about aligning our rights with our duties, and our actions with our values. Ethics is about being a good citizen and a good human being.
