India's coastal resources and natural hazard preparedness status

Exam =  UPSC CSE Main 2023 GS Paper 1

Question -

Comment on resource potentials of the long coastline of India and highlight the status of natural hazard preparedness in these areas.

Answer

The long coastline of India offers substantial resource potentials, including fisheries, maritime trade, tourism, and renewable energy generation through offshore wind and wave energy. The coastline serves as a vital economic lifeline, contributing significantly to the country's GDP and employment. It also presents opportunities for port development and coastal infrastructure projects, fostering trade and industrial growth.

However, the coastal areas are prone to various natural hazards, including cyclones, tsunamis, and coastal erosion. The status of natural hazard preparedness in these areas has seen improvements over the years, but challenges persist. Efforts have been made to enhance early warning systems, strengthen disaster response mechanisms, and improve coastal infrastructure resilience.

Coastal states have established dedicated disaster management authorities, implemented coastal zone management plans, and promoted community-based disaster preparedness programs. The implementation of the National Cyclone Risk Mitigation Project and the establishment of cyclone shelters have significantly enhanced the country's preparedness for cyclonic events.

Nonetheless, certain areas still face challenges in terms of adequate infrastructure, early warning dissemination, and community preparedness. The need for further investment in resilient infrastructure, coastal ecosystem conservation, and community-based disaster management remains crucial to mitigate the impacts of natural hazards along India's coastline.
